Starting university as a first-year student can be a bit overwhelming, but getting involved in student societies is a great way to find your community. At Macquarie University, I’ve joined several societies related to my studies in computer science and engineering, including social, robotics, and computing clubs.

While Macquarie’s societies are smaller compared to larger universities like UNSW, this creates a close-knit and active community where members often join multiple groups. Each society is run by a student leadership team that handles everything from events to marketing, and we receive funding and support from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) to help us host events and competitions.

As a first-year student, I’ve taken on leadership roles like Social Media Coordinator and Head of Operations to build connections and contribute to this dynamic community. Through this blog, I hope to provide some insight into the societies that have been most beneficial for me and can help you too.

Final Thoughts

Getting involved in societies at Macquarie has been the most rewarding part of my first year. Whether it’s building rovers, coding at hackathons, or flying drones, these communities help you build skills, friendships, and experiences that last well beyond university.
